EOBA/SmartMoves Youth Internship Program
Mission Statement The Youth Internship Program at EOBA SmartMoves takes a profound pride in providing the youth employees with hope, opportunity and empowerment. Through our program, not only do we fervently strive to prepare the youth employees for the workforce, we also implement a sense of leadership, self-respect, teamwork and dedication. Under the mentoring and guidance of the Youth Internship Coordinator and Senior Staff, the youth are held accountable for their actions and required to perform nothing less than their absolute best. I believe that holding the youth to the highest standards possible is the only way to uplift the community and instill a sense of accomplishment.
Vision Upon exiting this program our youth will be trained in a variety of fields and will proudly display great character, academic excellence, self respect, a high sense of morale, incredible work ethic, exceed the stigma of expectations and be the role models for there generation and the future youth. The youth will be able to succeed in multiple areas of the work world and be lifetime community service individuals.
Life Skills Training Throughout the duration of the internship, the youth employees are educated and trained in the following areas: cost control, menu planning, gourmet cooking, organic gardening, leadership skills, public speaking, grant-writing, curriculum development, electronics, graphic design, small business management and environmental/food justice. We attempt to teach the interns these skills through active learning, a hands-on approach in which less emphasis is placed on transmitting information and more on developing specific skills. For example, if SmartMoves hosts an event or participates in an event, the interns are involved in every aspect of the planning and preparation such as: actively taking part in the initial meetings in which senior staff members brainstorm ideas to construct a successful event, learn advertising skills and graphic design as they help develop and design flyers and posters for fundraisers, outreach projects and community events, gain knowledge of cost control as they assist the chef with menu planning and gourmet cooking and lastly, the interns become skilled with budgeting and controlling costs for future projects.
Elgibility To be considered for the youth internship program, the following is required: must be between age 13-18, a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0, a mandatory 8-12 hours of volunteer work per month, and participation in all SmartMoves events such as food drives, fundraisers, community outreach and field trips. *All potential youth interns will be interviewed and evaluated by the existing interns of the program. * Youth that don’t meet the minimum requirements will be accepted, and placed on an academic plan.
